Cinematography

Find the opening sequence to a film or TV drama of your choice on YouTube and embed the video in a blogpost called 'Cinematography blog tasks'.

1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.

Throughout the sequence there is a mix of Long shots, extreme long shots, medium shots, an OTS, medium long shot, establishing shots, hand held, closeups, extreme closeups, crane shot, medium shots, low angle, High angle.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

The setting is explored through many different extreme long shots and establishing shots that make it clear that the setting would either be a mansion estate or through many other crane shots be an urban city landscape and specifically high rise office buildings.

The narrative is also built through these extreme long shots and establishing shots as it makes it clear that the characters that we will be introduced to live or lived within that estate and now will follow their lives in the city, furthermore the very start of the sequence establishes four of the characters that we can assume are siblings as they are huddled together side by side, also we can tell from the narrative that there is a character that can be assumed to be the father figure who is always seen without his face in shot or with long shots and high angles that establish a sense of disconnect between the children and the man. Also through the use of an urban setting and closeups of newspapers we could also infer that there will be some sort of event that occurs due to this landscape that affects the central characters.

From the way the characters are shown through medium shots and medium long shots without other long shots we can tell that because most of the sequence shows the characters as being on their own we can infer that the siblings do not have an entirely great relationship with each other and are very rarely seen to be all together with the father figure.

Secondly, find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blog post.

3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.

The camera shot of Rick is a close up of the side of his face and a medium closeup of Negan while also having the camera at a slightly low angle. The use of the low angle establishes Negans superiority over Rick while the closeup has the audience create an emotional response to Ricks reaction and emotional turmoil that is shown on his face and helps the audience further connect with the emotions of Rick. The medium long shot of Negan further empowers the image of Negan as he is dominant within the scene taking up most of the screens space.

Marxism & hegemony: blog tasks

Task 1: Mail Online review of Capital 1) Re-read the  Mail Online review of  Capital . Why does it suggest that  Capital  features a left-wing ideology? Capital was as stuffed full with fashionable causes as Jeremy Corbyn’s function diary. 2) Choose  three  quotes from the review that are particularly critical of  Capital  and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why? 'With a fizzle like a firework on a wet night, Capital (BBC1) dribbled to a soggy ending.' 'the crime was handed from one cardboard character to the next. That’s not a whodunnit, it’s a cop-out.' 'Everything British came in for a dose of loathing' I think that some of the criticism is fair and that Capital did feel like it did not come to a satisfying conclusion as you might think it would from the stress and fears of the characters in the first episode and are wrapped up in a way that feels like it was done for the sake of just getting the series done and...

Blinded By The Light: case study

Background and Production 1) What is the story behind the production of the film? is a rites of passage comedy drama directed by  Gurinder Chadha , who also directed  Bend It Like Beckham . Set in 1987, it revisits Manzoor's teenage years and much of it is directly based on real events. One unlikely consequence of this is that his teenage friendship with Amolak has now been immortalised – not something either of them could have imagined in their wildest dreams. 2) What was the audience reaction to the film? audiences found personal connections to the story. I could not have predicted that Israeli women in Jerusalem, white teenage American boys in Omaha, Nebraska and older white women in Australia who had seen the film would all contact me on social media and thank me for telling their story. I had not expected to be approached, at screenings from Glasgow to Seattle, by people who seemingly had nothing in common with the protagonist but said they had connected emotionally with ...

Deutschland 83: case study

Introduction: Reviews and features Read the following reviews and features on  Deutschland 83 : The Guardian - Your next box set: Deutschland 83 The Guardian - Deutschland 83 Pity the Germans don't like it 1) Find one positive aspect and one criticism of  Deutschland 83  in the reviews. created an irresistible export: a funky exercise in pop nostalgia underpinned by actual events.  It’s a perfect moment in a near-perfect series 2) Why does the second Guardian article suggest the Germans didn't like the show? By focusing the story around Martin Rauch, a young East German border guard going undercover in the west, it doesn’t just make the viewer empathise with a Stasi agent on a human level – in the way The Lives of Others did – it makes us engage with the socialist regime’s worldview, in which a military exercise in West Germany poses a potentially existential threat. 3) Find three 'below the line' comments from either of the Guardian articles. What did th...
