Editing video feedback and learner response

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

  • A lot of credit here - excellent match on action / continuity editing at the start with strong shot / reverse shot. Follows 180 degree rule
  • Superb narrative but think the dialogue could have kept it serious - no need to play it for laughs.
  • ending was genuinely funny and hugely entertaining but still think this could have been a stunning serious sequence on its own!
  • a couple of continuity errors - Jump cut when first seeing mask

3) Now reflect on your video. Did you meet the brief and successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned?

I think that I had met the brief in spirit entirely only due to the fact that there was no second character but was replaced with a talking mask which in my eyes fit the description of having a dialogue between to characters. In terms of the 180 rule and shot/reverse shot I think were met completely without issue and the match on action fit really well although I know we could have added more now in retrospect.

4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.

WWW: I think the camera shots were basically perfect when it came to the OTS because there was no dead space and both characters were clearly seen in shot so the connection and conversation between the two can be easily established and understood by the audience while I also think that my sound design fit beautifully throughout the entire production as its intent was to create a serious atmosphere and build that tension and suspense.

EBI: I think that the narrative definitely could have been made to be entirely serious (But I wanted it to be unserious and get a little laugh because I know that I wont be able to later unless a brief needs a scene to be comedic and it still ended up working) while i also think that i could've added many more types of shots but also match on action and maybe a little bit more influence on the lighting so that it doesn't look as grainy.

5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?

I found that trying to make everything line up as it should be was the most difficult as it took a lot of time to try and find the best uses of a shot to influence the rest of the product as if a scene goes for too long the music might not match up in the end while if its to short it might not have the impact that is intended for it.

The way this should help is that i will now be more careful and put scenes together first in how i want them to line up and make more and more shots thinking more critically and using much more creative ways of expressing a scene rather than just long singular scenes in my future productions.

Background and Production 1) What is the story behind the production of the film? is a rites of passage comedy drama directed by  Gurinder Chadha , who also directed  Bend It Like Beckham .
