Y12 exam - Media Paper 2: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

23/34 B

WWW - Q1 is very strong: top level. You also show good question focus in Q2 and clearly know the texts very well.

EBI - Id like to see more sophistication in your evaluation of theory in order to open up A/A*. For example more discussion of politics - Left vs Right, Capitalism vs communism, Marxism + Hegemony would be perfect here.

-When brining in other theories, perhaps link them to hall by saying 'Gerbner may be more valid than hall' to keep that sharp, question focus.

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. Firstly, focus on the unseen question and identify two aspects of the poster that you could have written about in your answer.

  • representation of youth as diverse in terms of gender and race
  • use of props to denote the narrative and genre elements

3) Look at the indicative content for Q1 again and make a note of any theories or examples of media terminology you could have used in your answer.

  • Short hand stereotypes - Medhurst

4) Now focus on the TV 25-marker. Read this exemplar response for the TV question and pick out three arguments, phrases or theories from the essay that you could use in a future question on Capital and Deutschland 83.

  • The Daily Mail’s review of capital described it as ‘more packed with left-wing causes than Jeremy Corbyn’s diary’ which suggests a preferred reading that is left-wing and socialist. Indeed, an analysis of characters and representations supports this idea of producers promoting a ‘woke’, left-wing agenda.
  • Just like Capital, it could be argued D83 has a left-wing bias in its portrayal of different social classes and political perspectives.
  • Gramsci’s theory of hegemony is relevant here as it could be argued that Capital’s relentless focus on the importance of hard work, earning money and contributing to the London economy unconsciously reinforces capitalist ideology.

5) Finally, identify three things you need to revise for Media Paper 2 before your next assessment or mock exam.

  • I need to revise theorists that link to stereotypes and genre
  • Social contexts in media to use in unseen
  • Ideology in the texts

Music video pre-production

1) Music video treatment You may already have a finished music video treatment from your summer project and/or preliminary exercise - definitely use or develop that if it works with your project.  However, you may need to update your treatment or even change it completely now you have finished your preliminary exercise. The original example from the summer for music video treatments can be found here. Green day - Wake me up when September ends - Original Artist + Song ClueS (will abbreviate to CS for treatment) - Artist Warm tones: Orange, teal 2 shots, low angle, Nostalgia/friendship The camera is on a close up of the pavement curb as 'CS' steps up revealing shoe brand. Then the camera moves anticlockwise and up to meet the face of 'CS' and cuts to a medium shot of him walking towards a bridge. Camera cuts to a side view and as 'CS' walks, the time changes and man is introduced walking alongside 'CS' towards the bridge. Montage of both actors having fun...

Statement of Intent

This week, we need to write and submit a second draft of our Statement of Intent that will be marked and given feedback in terms of a current level and approximate grade. The Statement of Intent is worth 10 of the 60 marks so if we want A/A* we'll need something close to full marks on this component.    One important point to remember is that your Statement of Intent is what you are planning to do - so it must be written in the future tense ('I will...' rather than 'I have...') This is not an evaluation but instead a written account of what you intend to produce. You need to submit the second draft of your Statement of Intent as a NEW blog post AND email or share a version from Microsoft Word / Google Docs with your coursework teacher. Statement of Intent guidance is provided by AQA in their NEA Student Booklet but we strongly recommend you also look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too (you'll need to log in with your Greenford Googl...
