Preliminary exercise learner response

1) Type up your teacher's feedback in full plus a summary of the comments you received from other students in the class.

• Loads to credit here – the second half in particular has some brilliant moments. The ‘golden hour’ sunshine and timing/lighting is beautiful – did you try a bit of slow motion in there too?

• Opening shot/performance element is largely well-synched but not sure on framing and location. Can you re-shoot in a rehearsal studio? Could you get a band behind you? This could make a real difference.

• Footwear shot is great! I would cross-cut between the two sections though?

• Think about how to end up with the 3 minutes – I wonder if you do need the opening?

• Needed brand identity of your artist in there – that was part of the brief for the preliminary exercise.

2) Using a combination of your own reflection on the preliminary exercise and the feedback you were given, write three WWW bullet points and three EBI bullet points for your work.

WWW: I had created a music video extract that included two locations and had a narrative, while the colour grading also created a really good feel to the video

EBI: Need a better location, a bit choppy and slow for some of the shots, colour grading dose'nt match the performance element at the start

3) How effectively did you complete the objective you laid out in your mini preliminary exercise statement of intent?

I did but I missed out on the brand identity for my artist but completed it on time.

4) What have you learned from the preliminary exercise that will help you in the actual coursework project?

I need to plan my filming better and have a more suited location for my narrative aspect

5) Now you have completed the preliminary exercise, will you change anything about your actual coursework video plan? This could include your concept, cast/actors or technical elements such as mise-en-scene, camerawork or editing.

I think i could definitely improve on my music video and will change a few things as I did not film exactly what I wanted to do and not exactly following my intent and treatment so I will attempt to do so for the next exercise and rough cut.

Television industry contexts

Independent: British viewers can't get enough of foreign-language dramas Read this  Independent feature on foreign-language dramas . If the website is blocked or forcing you to register  you can access the text of the article here . It features an in-depth interview with Walter Iuzzolino who curates Channel 4's Walter Presents programming. Answer the questions below: 1) What does the article suggest regarding the traditional audience for foreign-language subtitled media? Fifteen years ago, if you'd mentioned to a colleague that you'd spent Saturday night glued to a subtitled European drama, you'd have been quietly declared pretentious, dull and, possibly, a little odd.Skip to today and foreign-language dramas aren't even on-trend, they're fully mainstream. Now we are as likely to discuss the latest Danish thriller over a morning flat white at our desks as we are a new season on HBO. 2) What does Walter Iuzzolino suggest is the key appeal of his 'Walter P...

Editing blog task

Your final analytical blog task is to find a film or television clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip. Shawn of the dead (2004) 0:01 - 2:50  1800~ Words (Should be a good read) Starting with editing the scene that begins the sequence of events within this clip starts off with a few straight cuts create juxtaposition that establish the main character and links the eyesight of the protagonist ‘Shawn’ to a board on the wall which helps establish that what’s written on there is significant to him and specifically enables the audience to gain a grasp and some context behind Shawn as a character and then the its edited in a way in which the camera straight cuts to someone laying on the couch with Shawn in the back. This establishes a connection between him and the character as being close as we as an audience can assume they are friends due to the request made by the man laying on the couch. After this scene a lon...
