Mise-en-scene blog

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

Lighting: The lighting within the scene makes the centre table with everyone around it quite dominant while leaving other aspects in the background quite dark creating an almost warm atmosphere around the table as being the only safe place.

Costume: The outfits are rough and look quite worn as if they haven't been changed or cleaned for a very long time suggesting the possibility that they are unable to keep their clothes clean or that they choose not to.

Actors: the actors are positioned in such a way that it seems like they are all facing the lady on the right which could suggest her as being authoritative in this scene or the fact that they are intently listening while their body language can also suggest a little bit of weariness in being around this character.

Props: there is quite a lot of set dressing in terms of candles and random objects hanging from the support beams which could imply a crowded space, while the fact that jack sparrow is holding onto his sword could suggest that he might feel threatened.

Setting:The fact that there is so much set dressing in the objects hanging in the back and just other random objects strewn about, it would imply that it is a lived in space possibly by only one person as they do not care for cleanliness, and might also create the idea that the person living there does not get many visitors.

Makeup: The rugged countenance of the faces and possible dirt can suggest uncleanliness and lack of grooming, or a long period of time on a journey.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

Django unchained (2012)          Time: 3:10        Historical

Breaking bad: season 3 episode 13             Time: 4:01         Crime

Lighting, Prop and setting

In the breaking bad scene, the location that the three men are in is very dimly lit which could imply discretion and secrecy of certain actions and or possible altercations that would rather be held away from public view or in view of any  authority however within Django's scene we can see that the room is quite well lit which could help us infer that everything the owner does completely within his rights and that he is justified in his actions, which could imply that he either holds more authority than the law or that he is allowed to be doing this by right.

In terms of props, within breaking bad two of the men that are confronting Walter are holding guns which creates the idea that they are there to kill him or possibly make him do something, however since they are still only confronting him and have not yet killed him it may be inferred that Walter still has some value or reason for staying alive otherwise he would have been killed on sight as soon as they entered the building while similarly within Django there is a man holding a shotgun holding the two men hostage while the other man who seems like he is in charge (due to his much more expensive looking clothing and the fact he is at the head of the table) is holding a hammer ready to bring it down on the lady, this suggests that the two men have the intent to either kill all three of them or threaten them in order to get what they want out of them, as it seems from the way the actors are placed that they were originally guests there.

Finally in terms of setting in Breaking bad the scene takes place within a laundry mat at the dead of night, we can infer from this that generally at night there is not much if any work being done there and so is quite an isolated place that inst getting many people at the moment and could suggest that nefarious activities could be taking place or are going to take place while also having no windows further implying a sense of secrecy and wrongdoing. However in Django The scene is located in what seems to be a very wealthy and well furnished house that has been taken care of and used regularly, we can see this through the ornate decorations the large amount of candle sticks and glassware we can assume that the owner is very wealthy and could emphasise their immense economical prowess.

Television industry contexts

Independent: British viewers can't get enough of foreign-language dramas Read this  Independent feature on foreign-language dramas . If the website is blocked or forcing you to register  you can access the text of the article here . It features an in-depth interview with Walter Iuzzolino who curates Channel 4's Walter Presents programming. Answer the questions below: 1) What does the article suggest regarding the traditional audience for foreign-language subtitled media? Fifteen years ago, if you'd mentioned to a colleague that you'd spent Saturday night glued to a subtitled European drama, you'd have been quietly declared pretentious, dull and, possibly, a little odd.Skip to today and foreign-language dramas aren't even on-trend, they're fully mainstream. Now we are as likely to discuss the latest Danish thriller over a morning flat white at our desks as we are a new season on HBO. 2) What does Walter Iuzzolino suggest is the key appeal of his 'Walter P...

Editing blog task

Your final analytical blog task is to find a film or television clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip. Shawn of the dead (2004) 0:01 - 2:50  1800~ Words (Should be a good read) Starting with editing the scene that begins the sequence of events within this clip starts off with a few straight cuts create juxtaposition that establish the main character and links the eyesight of the protagonist ‘Shawn’ to a board on the wall which helps establish that what’s written on there is significant to him and specifically enables the audience to gain a grasp and some context behind Shawn as a character and then the its edited in a way in which the camera straight cuts to someone laying on the couch with Shawn in the back. This establishes a connection between him and the character as being close as we as an audience can assume they are friends due to the request made by the man laying on the couch. After this scene a lon...
